What do Spacers do in a RCC structure?

Spacers, also known as Cover Blocks in technical terminology are specifically designed blocks that serve to lift the rebar matrix off the ground so that concrete may flow underneath the rebar. Besides this they also:

Prevent Corrosion

Provide specific height for your structure before pouring

Provide thermal insulation from fire

Provides sufficient embedding to enable them to be stressed without slipping

Prevents sagging of rebars by providing support

Minimises that required concrete coverage during the pour.

Prevent flawed Onsite Practices:

Masons are engaged to make blocks or either wood, broken tiles and broken paver blocks are used to lift the rebar matrix. The cost of these measures can be much more expensive than using factory made spacers in the long run.

Effects of flawed Onsite Practices:

1. The non uniformity of these blocks do not provide adequate support
2. Incompatibility of material like wood, tiles or plastic does not allow for adequate bonding
3. Results in bad finishing that can affect the overall finish
